How to Read NHTSA Complaints Before You Buy Used

NHTSA complaint counts are self-selected reports. They are not normalised for sales volume and they are not a reliability score. YearTell does not publish stars, “best year” lists or advice to avoid a vehicle.

An NHTSA owner complaint is a report someone chose to file. It is not a census of defects and it is not a finding by the agency. A safety recall is a manufacturer campaign. YearTell shows both, labelled as such.

Start with the year-page for the exact model year you are considering. Read the component table in HTML, then the recall list, then a short set of narratives. If a system dominates the file, that is a reason to inspect that system, not a reason to invent a score.

Compare adjacent years only when an equal-exposure window exists. Lifetime totals make older years look busier because they have had more time on the road.

Confirm open recalls at nhtsa.gov and have a mechanic inspect the vehicle. YearTell cannot see the car in front of you.

A useful session looks like this: look up the exact year, read the system named most often, open every recall campaign, then skim the owner filings for that system. If the file is engine-heavy, have the engine inspected. If it is transmission-heavy, have the transmission inspected. That is a reading of the file, not a diagnosis.

Do not average complaint counts across years and call it a ranking. Older years have had more time on the road. Popular nameplates collect more reports. Publicised defects collect more reports. The year-page exists so you can see the mix, not so you can sort a leaderboard.
