NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation Snapshot 2026-09-07 543 complaints · 7 recalls

What problems show up on the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse?

215 of 543 filings named Airbags (40% of the file). That is what owners wrote, not a shop diagnosis of the vehicle in the driveway.

What to check before you buy a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse

A useful visit to this page takes five minutes. YearTell does not score years and cannot see the vehicle in front of you.

  1. Look up the VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov. This year has 7 campaigns on file below.
  2. Airbags. Confirm the airbag light behaves normally and that open airbag recalls are closed.
  3. Engine. Have a shop check for oil consumption, coolant leaks, rough idle and unusual engine noise.
  4. Electrical. Have a shop scan for stored codes and check battery, charging and any warning lights that stay on.
  5. Skim a few owner reports below for Airbags. Look for the same symptom repeating.
  6. Take that list to a mechanic. Do not turn the complaint total into a score.

NHTSA Safety Recalls Snapshot 2026-09-06 Open source record

Safety Recalls (7)

Official campaigns. Each one says what could go wrong and what the dealer was told to fix.

In short, these campaigns were filed about Transmission / driveline, Electrical, and Airbags.

  1. Recall campaign 14V092000

    Transmission / driveline

    Report date
    Component:
    Transmission / driveline (POWER TRAIN)
    Consequence:
If a vehicle's shift cable disengages from the transmission shift lever, a driver may be unable to shift gear positions and the indicated shift position may not represent the gear position the vehicle is in. Should a disengagement occur while the vehicle is being driven, when the driver goes to stop and park the vehicle, the driver may be able to shift the lever to the "PARK" position, but the vehicle transmission may not be in the "PARK" gear position. If the vehicle is not in the "PARK" position there is a risk the vehicle will roll away as the driver and other occupants exit the vehicle or anytime thereafter. A vehicle rollaway increases the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
    Remedy:
General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace any affected transmission shift cable adjusters, free of charge. The recall began on April 10, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Buick owners at 1-800-521-7300, and GMC owners at 1-800-462-8782. General Motors' number associated with this recall is 14048.

  2. Recall campaign 14V223000

    Electrical

    Report date
    Component:
    Electrical (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM)
    Consequence:
An inaccurate fuel gauge may result in the vehicle unexpectedly running out of fuel and stalling, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the ECM to correct the fuel gauge reading, free of charge. The recall began on June 27, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), and 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM's number for this recall is 14007.

  3. Recall campaign 14V266000

    Safety recall 14V266000

    Report date
    Component:
Not available in the source record
    Consequence:
If the steel cable becomes fatigued and separates, the seatbelt may not properly restrain the seat occupant increasing the risk of an injury in a crash.
    Remedy:
General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, if necessary, repair and replace the lap pretensioner, free of charge. Parts are not currently available. An interim notice will be mailed to owners in July 2014. A second notice will be mailed to owners once parts become available. The recall for the 2009-2010 model years began on July 11, 2014. The interim letter for the 2011-2014 model years were distributed on July 11, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-462-8782 (GMC), 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn). General Motors recall number for this campaign is 14187.

    Component:
Not available in the source record
    Consequence:
If the module experiences an electrical short, the vehicle could stall, increasing the risk of a crash.
    Remedy:
GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the chassis electronic module, free of charge. The recall began on December 26, 2014. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-006 (Cadillac), 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), and 1-800-462-8782 (GMC). GM’s number for this recall is 14515.

The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The message "Engine Power Reduced" was displayed. After waiting 20 minutes, the contact was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was diagnosed by the contact's friend, and it was determined that the clock spring had failed and needed to be replaced; however, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V614000 (Electrical System), but the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 195,000.

My car has been having a problem with traction control/service stabilitrak and losing power to the engine since I purchased it. The problem was only occasionally, now it does it EVERYTIME I drive. First it pops up with traction control off message, once that happens it starts to lose power to the engine making the car(heavy car) shudder so bad I cannot drive. The transmission lags on acceleration and it also pops up with "service stabilitrak", "Power loss to engine "And the car will not move until I can pull over and turn it off. Very scary. I have 4 kids and its losing power while Im driving on the highway. Ive replaced sensors, Cleaned the throttle body and also changed spark plugs and changed fuses. It's very dangerous and I found out this is VERY common , especially for my year.

The dealer ( P & C Auto of Vance SC) used a code reader to clear out safety codes before the car was purchased. After having a diagnostic test done, a mechanic was able to show the codes and when they were cleared. He recommended returning the car back as it was not safe to operate. I would like to have this looked at. I sent a letter to both the dealer and the finance company ( Mid Atlantic of Clearwater Florida) to be reimbursed so that I can purchase a car from elsewhere and to have this car removed from my credit report. The car has been at the mechanic since May where it was towed after being dragged across the road and stalling out. It sat overnight because it would not start. He is unable to repair. Both parties have failed to return my phone calls, emails, or written requests. I've met with an attorney and I'm ready to pursue legal actions because I could have been killed along with my children on several occasions. Please check this car out and the safety codes (P1682 and P0689)

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common problems on the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse?

Owners named Airbags most often — 215 of 543 reports (40%). That is the NHTSA file, not a diagnosis of every vehicle.

Are there recalls for the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse?

NHTSA lists 7 safety recall campaigns. They were filed about Transmission / driveline, Electrical, and Airbags. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov; a campaign on this page can still be open on a specific vehicle.

What should I inspect before buying a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse?

Look up the VIN for open recalls. Confirm the airbag light behaves normally and that open airbag recalls are closed. Then skim owner filings for the same symptom and take that list to a mechanic.

Does a high complaint count mean I should skip this year?

No. Counts are reports people chose to file and they are not adjusted for sales volume. YearTell does not publish scores or a list of years to skip. Inspect the vehicle.
