NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation Snapshot 2026-09-07 265 complaints · 9 recalls

What problems show up on the 1990 Jeep Cherokee?

142 of 265 filings named Brakes (54% of the file). That is what owners wrote, not a shop diagnosis of the vehicle in the driveway.

Second is Cruise / speed control (48 reports).

There are 9 official safety recalls on this year. They were filed about Lights, Cruise / speed control, and Brakes. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov — a campaign on this page can still be open on a specific truck.

The 1989 has 190 reports on file; this year has 265. Older years collect more reports just by being on the road longer. If you need a fairer comparison, use the equal-time view.

What to check before you buy a 1990 Jeep Cherokee

A useful visit to this page takes five minutes. YearTell does not score years and cannot see the vehicle in front of you.

  1. Look up the VIN for open recalls at nhtsa.gov. This year has 9 campaigns on file below.
  2. Brakes. Have a shop check pads, rotors, fluid and whether the pedal feels firm.
  3. Cruise / speed control. Test cruise control and ask about unintended-acceleration reports on this year.
  4. Engine. Have a shop check for oil consumption, coolant leaks, rough idle and unusual engine noise.
  5. Skim a few owner reports below for Brakes. Look for the same symptom repeating.
  6. Take that list to a mechanic. Do not turn the complaint total into a score.

The contact owns a 1990 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 30-45 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to respond. The contact stated that he increasingly applied pressure on the brake pedal until the vehicle responded. There was a 100-feet stopping distance delay. The dealer was notified of the failure and declined to diagnose the vehicle. The contact provided a description of the failure to the dealer who informed him that the brake pump motor assembly needed to be replaced; however, the parts were no longer available nationwide. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact later became aware of NHTSA Campaign Number: 96V260000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) which he associated with the failure; however, the parts were not available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not provide any assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 195,492.

MY 4YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND I WERE ON OUR WAY HOME WHEN MY BRAKES ALMOST COMPLETELY WENT OUT AT ABOUT 45MPH. LUCKILY WE WERE ON A STRAIGHT COUNTRY BACKROAD WITH A GRAVEL SHOULDER TO AID IN SLOWING DOWN. TOWED THE JEEP TO THE CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP 2 WEEKS LATER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC ON 04/24/2017 WHERE THEY CONFIRMED THE ISSUE TO BE THE ACTUATOR PUMP UNDER A #702 RECALL. I WAS GIVEN 2 OPTIONS, SELL MY JEEP TO CHRYSLER FOR ~$600 OR GET IT REPLACED WITH AFTERMARKET PARTS WITH BOTH PARTS AND LABOR TO BE COVERED BY CHRYSLER. CONSIDERING I HAD PURCHASED THE XJ (SO CLEAN AT THE TIME) FOR $3000 PLUS HAD DROPPED $1,100 ON NEW TIRES TWO MONTHS PRIOR IN FEBRUARY I DID NOT FIND SELLING IT FOR ~$600 A FINANCIALLY WISE DECISION. SO I OPTED WITH GETTING THE PARTS REPLACED. WELL FOR THE PAST 4 MONTHS NOW WHENEVER I CHECK IN ON MY JEEP, THE CHRYSLER DEALERSHIP INFORMS ME THEY ARE STILL WAITING ON PART NUMBERS FROM CHRYSLER SINCE THE CURRENT EMPLOYEES HAVE NOT COME ACROSS THIS RECALL YET AND WHEN I CONTACT CHRYSLER I AM JUST INFORMED THAT THEY NO LONGER MAKE THE ORIGINAL PARTS AND ARE STILL SEARCHING FOR ONE LEFT OUT THERE. THIS LAST WEEK THEY INFORMED ME THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO LOCATE AN ORIGINAL PART PLUS THE OFFER STILL STANDS FOR ~$600. I HAVE YET TO GET A RESPONSE THIS PAST WEEK ABOUT THE OTHER OPTION I ORIGINALLY AGREED UPON (REPLACING WITH AFTERMARKET PARTS). I DON'T SEE $600 AS A SOLUTION TO THE RECALL AS BOTH NADA AND KBB PRICE MY JEEP FROM $2,200-$4,900 IN MY AREA (BEND, OR). I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO GET MY BELOVED JEEP BACK UP TO SAFETY STANDARDS FOR MY DAUGHTER AND I. I LOVE JEEP, PROBABLY ALWAYS WILL BUT I DON'T WANT TO BE SHORTED MONEY OR SAFETY BECAUSE OF NEGLECT TO REPAIR. THANKS FOR TAKING YOUR TIME TO READ THIS.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common problems on the 1990 Jeep Cherokee?

Owners named Brakes most often — 142 of 265 reports (54%). That is the NHTSA file, not a diagnosis of every vehicle.

Are there recalls for the 1990 Jeep Cherokee?

NHTSA lists 9 safety recall campaigns. They were filed about Lights, Cruise / speed control, and Brakes. Check the VIN at nhtsa.gov; a campaign on this page can still be open on a specific vehicle.

What should I inspect before buying a 1990 Jeep Cherokee?

Look up the VIN for open recalls. Have a shop check pads, rotors, fluid and whether the pedal feels firm. Then skim owner filings for the same symptom and take that list to a mechanic.

Does a high complaint count mean I should skip this year?

No. Counts are reports people chose to file and they are not adjusted for sales volume. YearTell does not publish scores or a list of years to skip. Inspect the vehicle.
